Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty and her businessman husband Raj Kundra have shared a journey marked by both personal and professional milestones. But behind their high-profile marriage lies a story that began with a simple real estate decision, setting the stage for their eventual union.
Raj Kundra, born and raised in London to Punjabi parents, had moved to Dubai to establish his business by 2007. It was during this period that he first met Shilpa Shetty in the UK. She had recently gained fame after winning the fifth season of the reality show Big Brother, and the couple’s introduction was facilitated by a mutual friend who also managed Shilpa. In an interview with Bharti TV, Kundra recalls that their initial conversations were easy and engaging, and it was during this time that he began to pursue her romantically.
The Proposal and Property in Mumbai
Shilpa was clear from the start about her priorities, stating explicitly that she would not marry anyone who expected her to leave India. Respecting her wishes, Kundra sought a property in Mumbai to establish a home that would align with her want to stay in the country.
He learned about a new apartment complex being built directly opposite Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic Juhu residence, Jalsa, and immediately bought the seventh-floor unit without even inspecting it. This step allowed him to propose to Shilpa, which she accepted, confident they could maintain their lives in India. Kundra emphasizes that he never pressured her to relocate and promised that their travels would be limited to holidays abroad.
Family and Personal Life
While Kundra attempted to persuade his parents to move to Mumbai, they chose to remain in the UK, preferring the familiarity of their long-established community.
Shilpa’s mother, Sunanda Shetty, however, lives with the couple following the passing of her husband. Shilpa and Raj are also parents to two children, son Viaan and daughter Samisha, and have maintained a close-knit family environment.
Beyond their personal life, the couple recently visited Vrindavan to meet spiritual guru Premanand Maharaj. During the visit, Raj Kundra offered one of his kidneys to the guru, who graciously acknowledged the gesture while advising that the gift was symbolic of goodwill. Shetty too sought guidance from the guru on chanting practices.
