When to Start Ekadashi Fasting?
Those wishing to begin Ekadashi fasting this year should begin on the Ekadashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha of the Margashirsha month, also known as Agahan. The Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi fast is known as Utpanna Ekadashi.
Date to start Ekadashi fast in 2025
This year, Utpanna Ekadashi falls on Saturday, November 15th. According to the calendar, the Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi date is from 12:49 AM on November 15th to 02:37 AM on November 16th. You can begin the Ekadashi fast from November 15th, 2025. This is a very auspicious day.
Why do we begin the Ekadashi fast on Utpanna Ekadashi?
According to mythology, Goddess Ekadashi was born on Margashirsha Ekadashi and protected the resting Lord Vishnu from the demon Mura. Mura was killed by Goddess Ekadashi. Pleased with this, Lord Vishnu told the goddess that since she was born on Ekadashi, she would also be worshipped on Ekadashi. This Ekadashi will be called Utpanna Ekadashi.
For this reason, it is considered best to begin the Ekadashi fast on the day of Utpanna Ekadashi. In addition to Utpanna Ekadashi, you can also begin the Ekadashi fast on the Ekadashi of Chaitra, Vaishakh, and Magh.
