Send Push

Coronation Street's Colson Smith has hinted at a potential new role on a popular show, as he prepares to bid farewell to the soap later this month.

The actor first graced the cobbles of Weatherfield in 2011 when he was just 11-years-old, with his portrayal of the cheeky Craig Tinker, younger son of Beth Tinker (played by Lisa George), quickly endeared him to Corrie fans.

However, after an impressive 14-year stint on the show, it was announced earlier this year that his time on the soap was drawing to a close, with his final scenes set to air in the coming weeks.

Amid his impending departure from , Colson has revealed that he's keen to make a swift return to our screens. He said he was "waiting to hear back" from a well-loved BBC programme for which he submitted a self-tape audition.

During a chat with his Corrie co-stars and Jack P Shepherd for their On The Sofa podcast, Colson disclosed that he's hoping to secure a part in Ludwig, the detective drama starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin.

He shared that he's auditioning for the role of a policeman on the show, but admitted he found this challenging due to similarities to his character PC Tinker in Corrie. He said: "I think it was too similar to Craig Tinker. I find it very, very difficult to play a copper.

"The casting brief – like I basically did a brainstorm of everything that was on the casting brief – it was, like, cringey, likeable. I was going through it and it was grating."

Despite still being in the dark about whether he has secured his new role, Colson did not shy away from admitting his uncertainty, saying: "I did it and I've not heard anything back, so that's the way it goes. But I think it was just nice to do my first tape and it was for a relatively big [production].

"I knew I wasn't going to get it sort of thing, because one, it was for a big show and two, a copper, but it was just a nice experience to get out and do it."

As his tenure on Corrie comes to an end, with his final scenes already shot and set to broadcast soon, he has made a lasting impression with a host of unforgettable story arcs during his time on the street.

The actor's portrayal of Craig's battle with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in 2018 stands out as a particularly powerful chapter in his journey.

Additionally, his on-screen bonds with Bethany Platt (played by Lucy Fallon) and Faye Windass () have helped cement his place in the hearts of Coronation Street aficionados throughout his time on the programme.

Coronation Street is on tonight at 8pm on ITV1. Catch up on previous episodes on ITVX.
