Emmerdale Aaron and Robert stars tease a Robron wedding as they reunite on-screen

Ever since Robert Sugden returned to the Emmerdale village in May determined to win back Aaron Dingle, it’s been the moment Robron fans have been longing for – for the much-loved characters to finally be an official couple again.

And finally after months of gripping ITV drama, Robert, played by Ryan Hawley, and Aaron, played by Danny Miller, agreed tonight to give their relationship a proper go as they told each how other how much they wanted to be together.

“You want me, I want you,” they said as they made a pact to keep their couple status a secret – for now to allow their love to blossom. Now the two actors Danny and Ryan have sat down to talk about the momentous event in their characters' relationship.

Danny told the Mirror: “They are finally together! When I got the script for it, I must admit I was thrown myself how quick it happened straight after John. Anyone in their right mind would probably think ‘it’s best to stay out of relationships’ but this is a soap and at the heart of it, Aaron and Robert know they are the love of each other’s lives and is there any point waiting around?”

Ryan agrees, and he admitted: “All the obstacles are out the way and Robert and Aaron are free to be back together.

“They agree to keep it a secret because they don’t want the distraction of other people’s opinions - after all, Aaron has just found out his husband is a serial killer, he’s out of a coma and his husband is on the run. It’s time to move on! The fact it is so soon and he is jumping in with Robert doesn’t matter to them. They think it is best for them.”

The popular stars are both immensely proud of just how much their characters have been taken to the viewers’ hearts who affectionately refer to them as ‘Robron’. The phenomenon it has become, they say, is very flattering as actors. “They really are well loved,” said Danny. “Seeing the response since Robert returned has been amazing. “People do want them to be back together and even when Ryan left the soap, they are so loved and sought after, everyone was missing them being together. It’s been really nice.”

“The two characters are genuinely affectionate towards one another and they have this deep and meaningful relationship,” explained Ryan. “It’s lovely when people come up. I went to the butchers the other day and they said they were happy I was back. It makes you feel very valuable.”

Off screen the pair are close pals too. When Ryan left Emmerdale in 2019, the pair stayed in regular tough and it was Danny who played an instrumental part in persuading Ryan to return earlier this year. It’s a decision he definitely doesn’t regret. “I’d forgotten how much fun it is working on Emmerdale with both the cast and crew,” says Ryan happily. “I’m really enjoying it and Danny and I are such good mates.”

They both laugh as they admit their lives away from the soap have changed beyond recognition since they first worked together. Both are now fathers and happily married. Danny, who has been married to Steph Jones for three years, became a dad for the third time in July whilst Ryan, married to Daisy Prestes de Oliveira for 12 years, is a proud father to two children.

“We are no longer talking about where we are going on a Friday night,” he says. “We are talking about how quick we can get home that night. It’s nice and endearing. It shows how much the two of us have been together on and off screen, how we have come full circle and how we are both married with children now.”

Danny, who himself returned to the soap in 2023 after taking a break, continues: “We are doing this job for a second time around but for a different reason, which is purely to support our families and look after our children but to also have a laugh and enjoy the moments on set.”

Smiling, Ryan agrees. He says: “The fact we are both dads now means when we go home, we have got those responsibilities - more so than we did last time. We both really enjoy coming to work but then at home, we can enjoy the trials and tribulations of what comes with having children! I love spending all my time with them at home when I am not on set.”

One of the reasons why they get on so well, say the pair, is their shared sense of humour. Both confess they love nothing better in between filming to take the mickey out of each other. But both also take their jobs very seriously.

“Danny and I have such a great shared sense of humour,” confides Ryan. “There is a lot of banter between us and the rest of cast and crew. We try to have fun as well as telling the story and the chemistry is natural. We’ve been given some great stories together and we feel very lucky to be part of a soap couple who viewers have seen go through so many ups and downs.”

Danny added: “When you can hear the stifling of laughter in between takes it is us trying not to laugh! But this plays out well on-screen too and it shows how we take our friendship into the role as well. I feel lucky that we are at the forefront of so many storylines.”

Clearly loving being part of such a much-loved soap couple, the actors warn, however, true love will still not run that easily for Robron.

The Mirror can reveal the arrival of a new character, Kev, played by Chris Coghill, in Emmerdale will cause plenty of explosive twists and turns – and in true soap style, a new love triangle.

For it will transpire Robert secretly got married to Kev whilst he was in prison. Kev is now out of jail but returns to the Dales to tell Robert he’s dying. It puts Robert in an impossible dilemma, reveals Ryan, as to whether he should stick with where his heart lies with Aaron or return to Kev in his dying days. And to make matters even more complicated, it soon becomes clear Kev has villainous ways, just as Aaron’s ex-husband, John did.

“But it would be boring if true love ran smoothly in a soap wouldn’t it?” said Ryan with a laugh. “Poor Robert is going to have this huge dilemma and it’s a stressful time for him. He’s come back to the village to try to stop a marriage and now there is this other guy who is dying. When Aaron finds out Robert has a husband, it’s going to be explosive. But all is not what it seems and Kev is volatile, broken, damaged and he creates so many problems for Robert and Aaron.”

“He’s an endearing psychopath as opposed to John” explained Danny. “But it’s a new way of actually highlighting how Aaron and Robert do think the same – they have both found psychopaths separately in their lives who have both come in between them to really test their love and passion. Chris is brilliant as Kev and he’s a great addition.”

“He has such a lot of experience,” added Ryan. “It’s great to be working with him and Danny together.”

As for whether Robron will ever walk down the aisle again, the truth is something not even the actors know. Both agree it would, however, be the perfect icing on the cake if they did. “Hopefully one day, they will be able to be out in the open and honest with everyone,” said Danny. “But we will just have to wait and see!”
