The former Barcelona and France defender Eric Abidal has been forced to shut down social media rumours claiming that he had passed away over the weekend.
Abidal, 46, was diagnosed with liver cancer during his time at Barcelona back in 2011 but had the tumour removed the same year. He was then forced to undergo a liver transplant in 2012 before returning to play for Barcelona one year later. He also played for Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Olympiacos as well as representing his country 67 times at senior level during a stellar playing career.
Rumours over the weekend which circulated across social media claimed that Abidal had passed away due to complications from the liver transplant he underwent back in 2012. But Abidal used his own social media platforms to set the record straight.

"Some rumours should never exist," the former player wrote on hisInstagram account. "I'm here with my family and everything is fine. Respect is essential. There is a family and my children behind this.
"To be clear, I'm fine, I'm alive and well. Thank you for your support and messages of concern. Let's focus on what really matters."

Abidal's update was met with widespread relief and well wishes from football fans including those of Barcelona, whom Abidal served as sporting director between 2018 and 2020 after hanging up his boots. In total, Abidal won 15 trophies during his time at the Nou Camp.
After returning to France for a second stint with Monaco, Abidal finished his playing career in Greece on the books of Olympiacos. After holding a similar role at Barcelona following his retirement, Abidal is currently the sporting director for Al Wasl Sports Club in the United Arab Emirates.
