Matheus Cunha has sent mixed messages to the fans of and through a confusing goal celebration. Cunha is poised to leave Wolves for United in the summer transfer window with Ruben Amorim’s side in advanced talks with the Brazilian.
United are attached to Cunha’s exit clause and early in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old has been in excellent form this season, but his behaviour – both on and off the pitch – has riled Wolves supporters.
Cunha for clashing with ’s Milos Kerkez and has . He made it clear in January before signing a new contract with a hefty exit clause and those factors have combined to upset some supporters.
While his loyalty has been doubted by many, his talent isn’t in question and he opened the scoring for Wolves against on Saturday with a tap-in from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s low cross. That was his 15th goal of the season in the – and he caught the eye by celebrating by pointing at the badge on his chest.

“Matheus Cunha pointing to the badge? Don't insult our intelligence,” one Wolves fan wrote on X. Another added: “His move to Man United is on his mind. Let him get that sorted – because he clearly can't wait until the end of the season – and play somebody that wants to be at the club going forward.”
But speaking after the 3-0 win, in which he assisted the other two goals, Cunha said: "We are very committed to this club, everyone, and want to show the fans our capacity. We're starting to get the points we deserve and show everyone our work."
Asked about the Wolves fans, he added: "I always say that I am always happy to play for this team. Sometimes my emotion is too much because I love to be here."
His goal against Leicester means he has joined Roberto Firmino (in 2017/18) and Gabriel Martinelli (2022/23) as the only Brazilians to have managed 15 goals in a Premier League season. With four games left to play, he could still eclipse ’s former striker and ’s star forward.
If he does leave, there is likely to be some unhappy Wolves fans, considering the way Cunha has gone about it. But Amorim isn’t ready to talk about him as a United player, swerving the topic in his press conference on Friday.
“I will not say nothing about Matheus, because if I say I have to say 'yes' or 'no' and not comment on that,” said Amorim. “We have to focus on this season and the way we prepare for next season could change in these games, so it's difficult to predict what can happen in the future.”
