Two British tourists have died after jumping into a pool while on holiday in Portugal.

The 27-year-old and 29-year-old men were found at the bottom of a swimming pool at a hotel in Albufeira early this morning. Emergency services were called at around 4am and attempted resuscitation, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene. According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, both men appeared to have been drinking and did not know how to swim. Police said there is no suspicion of foul play.

At least one local paper in Portugal is reporting the two men who died this morning were both British, and were on holiday with friends.

The Mirror has approached the Foreign Office for comment.

Portuguese police could not be reached this afternoon for an official statement.

On June 4, Scottish tourist Greg Monks was found dead near Albufeira town centre after going missing a week earlier.

The 38-year-old plant mechanic from Glasgow is believed to have lost his life after jumping over a wall and falling down a steep hillside during a stag do night out with his friends.

A search was launched on May 28, and his parents and girlfriend Nicole Kelso flew to Albufeira to help with the efforts to find him.

Around four hours before Greg’s body was found by police, another young British tourist was found dead in Albufeira, at the back of a residential block below a steep drop near the Old Town.

The 21-year-old - who is said to have gone out drinking with pals before becoming disorientated as he tried to get back to his hotel - was never named. News of his death only emerged three days after Greg was found dead.

In July 2023, a 27-year-old British tourist also drowned at the Paraiso Hotel in Albufeira.

Last month, town hall chiefs in the party resort agreed fines of up to 4,000 euros (£3,375) for holidaymakers who fall foul of a strict new good behaviour code. Penalties of up to £1,250 are in place for people who enter bars and other business premises with their tops off, while fines for spitting or urinating in the street were agreed at between £125 and £630.
