EastEnders star Shona McGarty has revealed the deeply personal reason behind her decision to enter the I'm A Celebrity jungle with a heartfelt Instagram message about her mental health journey.
The actress is amongst the celebrities preparing to become a campmate on the ITV reality programme, which kicks off this weekend, reports Wales Online.
Control of her social media has been passed to others whilst she's in the camp, and as she departed for Australia, a touching farewell video appeared on her Instagram account.
Accompanying footage of a send-off celebration, a message read: "Anxiety and depression told her 'no' before... This time, she said YES.
"We wanted to share this beautiful moment saying our goodbyes to Shona before she heads into the jungle."
"Shona has always been open about her struggles with anxiety and depression, battles that once held her back. But this time, she's won by saying yes to one of the biggest challenges of her life. Yes to the jungle. Yes to herself."
The message went on: "This is a journey for Shona to truly discover who she is and she's living proof that you can rise above fear and take back your power."
"To anyone fighting their own mental health battles, Shona is your reminder that you can do it too," it stated. "One brave step at a time."
The actress has previously spoken candidly about her mental wellbeing, sharing on Instagram in October that she'd experienced "days that feel heavier than they should and moments when self-doubt creeps in". "I've learned that opening up and being honest about how I feel truly helps," she penned. "It's okay to not be okay, and it's even more than okay to be unapologetically me... flaws, feelings, and all."
Shona, who rose to fame portraying Whitney Dean in Albert Square, will be sharing the camp with stars including Ruby Wax, Martin Kemp, Eddie Kadi and Kelly Brook. Other celebs who have committed to the show include Angry Ginge, Jack Osbourne, Aitch, Alex Scott and Lisa Riley.
