COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation is exploring ways to improve traffic flow at Lanka Corner, Podanur-Sarada Mills Junction and Podanur-Vellalore-Chettipalayam Junction. It is proposed to modify the existing roundabouts at Lanka Corner and Podanur-Sarada Mills Junction while road improvement is suggested at Podanur-Vellalore-Chettipalayam Junction.
On Friday, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran conducted a joint inspection with the traffic police and the road safety team from IIT Madras at these places.
“The existing roundabouts in Lanka Corner and Podanur-Sarada Mills are undergoing corrections. The changes will be studied for a period of at least a week using drones and manual recording. Once the vehicle movement is stabilized, these will be made into permanent solutions. Road improvement is suggested at Podanur-Vellalore-Chettipalayam Junction,” the corporation commissioner told TOI.
Highlighting the specification of the suggested changes in the existing roundabouts, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Ashok Kumar told TOI: “At Lanka Corner, vehicle movement from GH towards railway station is less, but the space along the roundabout is more. On the contrary, vehicle movement from Town Hall is high, but the space is less. We have suggested that the roundabout be shifted five feet to the left and create more space for vehicles from the Town Hall area.”
“At Podanur-Sarada Mills Junction, the existing 13 feet radius of the roundabout is proposed to be reduced to 10 feet. This allows a smooth flow of vehicles making a perfect turn without collision. These changes will be made on Friday night, and the study will begin on Saturday.”
He said the road improvement at the Podanur-Vellalore-Chettipalayam Junction would be like that happened on the Pollachi Kurichi Road. “This includes the shifting of the bus stop at least 100-150 away and converting the entire stretch to bituminous road. These changes in road infrastructure will be carried out in the upcoming week,” he added.
