The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been highly active under the Trump administration, frequently making arrests of illegal immigrants on streets and now even in courthouses. In a recent case, a Wisconsin judge, Hannah Dugan , was led away in handcuffs as she allegedly helped an illegal immigrant evade immigration authorities. Here's all you need to know about her and why the internet is celebrating her indictment.

Who is Hannah Dugan? imageJudge Dugan, or Hannah Dugan, has been a Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge since 2016, and has been indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday for obstruction of justice and concealing Mexican national Eduardo Flores-Ruiz from federal law enforcement at the end of a pre-trial hearing.

According to prosecutors, Dugan escorted Ruiz and his lawyer out of her courtroom through a back jury door on April 18, after learning that ICE agents were in the courthouse for his arrest. While Ruiz was caught outside in a subsequent foot chase, Dugan was suspended from the bench in April by the state supreme court in a move expected to preserve public confidence in the judiciary.

If convicted on both counts, Dugan could face six years in prison. Her team of defence attorneys have maintained a single-line response saying that she maintains her innocence and looks forward to being vindicated by the court.

Ruiz had ended up in Dugan's court in mid-March after he allegedly punched and choked a man during an argument and hit a woman who tried to break it up, as per a police report.

Why is the internet celebrating Hannah Dugan's arrest?

The indictment of Hannah Dugan has brought back to life the ongoing fiery debate in the U.S. between Trump's administration and local authorities over the immigration crackdown. The response to her indictment has been polarised, with some celebrating her indictment as a victory against judicial overreach and others questioning judicial independence.

Mostly, the supporters of the Republican focus on immigrants, arrests and deportations have been overjoyed with Dugan's indictment, quoting that the arrest of illegal immigrants is necessary and no one who breaches the act is above the law.

"No one is above the law. Especially judges," wrote a person on X. "She’s facing MULTIPLE felony charges. LOCK HER UP!" added another.

Many have also been questioning the Democrats' support for the judge who obstructed a legal arrest, writing, "Still kind of crazy that so many Democrats went all-in defending this judge trying to help this illegal alien escape detention by the feds."

Judge Dugan is scheduled to enter a plea on Thursday, May 15th, 2025.
