“He was the difference”: Head coach Spencer Carbery praises Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson's game against Montreal Canadiens

Logan Thompson provided the Washington Capitals with a goaltending masterclass on Wednesday night as they outlasted the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round . Appearing in just his second playoff game as a Washington player, the 28-year-old goalie back from injury starred dramatically, deflecting all 14 third-period shots to hold off a narrow lead and send the Capitals to a 2-0 series lead.
Logan Thompson shut down Game 2 for Washington Capitals with timely saves
The Washington Capitals leaned very heavily on Logan Thompson in Game 2 during the third period, and the ex-Vegas Golden Knights goaltender did not let them down. As much as the Montreal Canadiens employed relentless forechecking and outshot Washington by a 14-5 tally in the third period, Logan Thompson stayed sharp when it mattered and made 25 saves on the evening.
One of his most shocking stops was halfway through the third when Josh Anderson initiated a 2-on-0 break. Thompson read it to perfection, flashing his glove to shut down a certain goal. He followed it up shortly with an important kick save off a deflection by Christian Dvorak to keep the Capitals ahead.
“I thought he was the difference tonight in the third,” Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said. “He wins us that game in the third period.”

Logan Thompson shines despite returning from injury
Only three weeks ago, Logan Thompson was out with an upper-body injury sustained in a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. His playoff preparedness was still in doubt until he brought the Capitals onto the ice for Game 1. Since then, he's been nothing short of sensational.

With only two full practices to his credit since his injury, he entered the postseason limelight with serene poise and laser-sharp concentration. The Washington Capitals are now two victories away from moving on, thanks in large part to their goaltender's timely brilliance. As long as Thompson keeps playing at this level of elite play, the team might not only win this round—but might also be setting themselves up for a deep playoff run for the first time since their 2018 championship victory.
