NEW DELHI: The Amarnath Yatra will remain suspended from Jammu on Thursday due to heavy rains in Kashmir , a senior official, according to the Jammu and Kashmir Information and Public Relations Department (DIPR) .

"Due to the heavy rains in the yatra area, the movement of pilgrims from base camps has been affected. Therefore, it has been decided that no convoy movement shall be allowed towards the base camps Baltal and Nunwan from Bhagwati Nagar Jammu on July 31," DIPR posted on X.

The pilgrimage was suspended on Wednesday, too, due to the inclement weather conditions.

The decision to halt the Amarnath Yatra was taken as a precautionary measure for the safety of devotees . It resumed earlier this month and is scheduled to conclude on August 9.

According to the DIPR, nearly 4 lakh lakh pilgrims have visited the Amarnath cave shrine since the pilgrimage began on July 3. "So far, over 3.93 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the Holy Cave Shrine during the Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2025," a DIPR post read.

The sacred Amarnath shrine, located at an altitude of 3,888 metres in south Kashmir, draws thousands of devotees each year. Devotees undertake the journey via the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route or the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route.
