NEW DELHI: Kashmiri students, traders, and professionals living in other parts of India are reportedly facing increasing threats and harassment in the aftermath of the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 28 lives. The J&K leaders have called on the central government to intervene immediately and ensure their safety.
PDP president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said she personally reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, extending her condolences over the killings and urging urgent action to protect Kashmiris facing intimidation.
“Spoke with Home Minister @AmitShahji to extend my deepest condolences & also express solidarity with bereaved families of the Pahalgam terror attack ,” she posted on X. “Also requested him to intervene in the wake of certain elements openly threatening Kashmiri students & traders across various states.”
Mufti’s concerns come in the wake of reported threats by right-wing group Hindu Raksha Dal, which allegedly warned Kashmiri Muslims in Dehradun to leave within 24 hours or face dire consequences.
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also sounded the alarm, noting a rise in hate incidents targeting Kashmiris across India. “There have been many incidents across the country wherein Kashmiri students are being harassed, beaten up, bullied and even asked to vacate their residential premises,” he said. “I request the union government to please ensure the safety of Kashmiri students.”
The Tuesday afternoon attack in a meadow near the tourist town of Pahalgam left the nation stunned. It is the deadliest terror incident in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
