Father of the RG Kar rape murder case victim alleged that his wife was “denied” admission to a private hospital under pressure from the state government, a day after she was injured during a protest march in Kolkata.
The victim’s mother, who reportedly suffered injuries to her forehead, hands and back in a “police lathicharge” on Saturday, had undergone a CT scan and other diagnostic tests to check for internal and external injuries.
“The doctor who checked my wife on Saturday evening said that she would be admitted for treatment. But after he left the hospital, there was a sudden change in the attitude of others in the hospital. They started dilly-dallying. Then they told me that my wife could not be admitted as there was some pressure on them from the state government,” the father said on Sunday.
He added that upon later contacting the doctor, “He, however, assured me that the medicine prescribed to her would be enough to heal her,” despite earlier prescribing that she would need at least two days of hospital care.
By Sunday afternoon, the mother, who had been allowed an overnight stay, was “discharged” from the hospital.
The woman has accused women police personnel of roughing her up during Saturday’s rally to the West Bengal state secretariat ‘Nabanna’. The march marked one year since her daughter’s rape and murder at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The alleged assault occurred at the Park Street crossing, where police baton-charged protesters attempting to break through barricades on their way to the secretariat via Vidyasagar Setu.
“Police pinned me to the ground. They broke my ‘shankha’ (traditional conch shell bangle) and I sustained injury on my forehead,” the mother claimed, adding that four to five police personnel had assaulted her in the scuffle.
Police have denied using any force on the parents of the victim. The father has further alleged that police attempted to stop the family from joining the protest march despite a court order permitting a peaceful rally.
