NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday urged Delhi residents not to complain about the city’s air quality this year, as the government — elected by the citizens — has restored the use of firecrackers.
Taking to X, Moitra wrote, “People of Delhi wanted this govt. The Govt wanted crackers to return. Everyone got what they wanted. Please let’s not waste any time this year moaning about air quality.”
Earlier during the day, the Supreme Court allowed green firecrackers to be used in Delhi between October 18 and 21.
The court directed that only NEERI-approved crackers will be sold, and police will conduct surprise checks to ensure manufacturers comply with the green norms.
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta welcomed the decision, saying it respects the sentiments of the people. Speaking to ANI, she said, "It is very important to strike a balance between traditions and environment. I thank the Supreme Court for issuing this order."
She added, “This decision honours the sentiments of the people of Delhi. I assure you that the people of Delhi and the government will keep the environment safe while we celebrate this festival. I express heartfelt thanks to the Supreme Court.”
