NEW DELHI: Indian National Lok Dal chief Abhay Singh Chautala on Tuesday received a death threat from an unknown person asking the leader to "stay out of their way" or face the consequences, PTI reported.
The threat was received via his son Karan Chautala over voice message. He has lodged a complaint with Chandigarh police.
He was warned to tell his father to “stay out of their way,” or risk meeting the same fate as “the pradhan”, a likely reference to INLD state chief Nafe Singh Rathee, who was shot dead in Bahadurgarh in February 2024. The same number also sent a message to Abhay Chautala’s private secretary, calling it a “final warning,” according to the complaint.
He said that he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number around 11pm on Tuesday, but it was quickly disconnected. Soon after, he got a voice note from a foreign number, in which the caller allegedly used abusive language targeting his father.
Reacting to this, MLA Arjun Chautala said, "We cannot allow this state to become a gangster state. What is the law and order situation today, everyone knows. We will raise our voice for our people, we cannot sit at home. We will keep raising law and order and other issues."
Karan noted that his father received a similar threat in July 2023, after which he was given Y-category security. Referring to the 2024 killing of INLD’s state chief, with the attackers still unidentified, he noted that his family has been vocal on issues like drugs and law and order in Haryana. Fearing for their safety, he urged police to trace the sender and protect Chautala’s entire family.
